The pedicle extends deep into a burrow and when disturbed, the pedicle contracts so that the brachiopod sinks into the burrow for protection. Lingulata brachiopods differ from most other brachiopods by having a shell that is composed of calcium phosphate instead of calcite. Allopatric distributions of closely related Lingulid, any member of a group of brachiopods, or lamp shells, that includes very ancient extinct forms as well as surviving representatives.
